I am never happier than when I am working creatively with my hands … articulating my ideas and influences through the mediums of clay and paper, and although
I enjoy and admire the work of many potters who make functional ware, I am not interested in my own work, with "usefulness".
Most of my ceramic work is derived from two elemental forms - a closed shape derived from vessels for storage & an open bowls shape derived from vessels for presentation.
For many years I have been fascinated by clay - the tactile sensation you get when working with it and the smoothness of this most pliable material. I use an homogeneous mixture of paper pulp made from shredded office paper and recycled clay to create the paperclay I use to compose sculptures, inspired by shapes and forms of both nature and man-made edifices.
I enjoy translating these concepts into sculptures, giving them shape and form, and perhaps a life of their own, to convey a story that reflects a balance of newly acquired knowledge, intuition and uncertainty - all producing individual and unique works of art. Creating my art fills me with good emotions, energises me and reinforces my confidence as a sculptor.
